WELLMAN

Brooklyn Schneider, a freshman guard, came off the bench for Mid-Prairie to score 23 points in a pair of games last weekend.

She is part of a youthful backcourt that includes sophomore Olivia Swartzendruber, and juniors Jovi Evans and Katelyn Harland.

Combined, they scored 35 points in a 69-30 win over Anamosa in the Golden Hawks’ River Valley Conference opener last Friday.

A day later, Schneider scored 10 points in a 59-43 loss to Northeast.

At Anamosa, the Golden Hawks (2-2) took a 16-7 lead in the opening quarter and slammed the door in the final quarter by scoring 23 points while holding Anamosa to 2.

Schneider scored a career-high 13 points and hit all three 3-point shots she took.

Evans and senior Nora Pennington added 10 points. Pennington also had a game-high 7 steals.

Brooklyn Schneider and Jovi Evans each scored 10 points for Mid-Prairie.

Trailing by 12 points late in the second quarter, a 3-pointer by Schneider and a pair of free throws by Evans closed the deficit to 25-18 in the final minute of the first half. A basket by Evans in the first minute of the third quarter trimmed it to 25-20.

Strong shooting by Northeast carried the Rebels after that to their third consecutive win.

Riessen hit a game-high three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 16 points.

Mid-Prairie’s Callie Huber added 9 points and team-high 6 rebounds.

“It felt like we were a bit slow to the basketball today,” Golden Hawks head coach Danny Hershberger said.

Benton seniors Emma Townsley and McKenna Kramer combined for 48 points and 11 3-pointers, shooting down the Golden Hawks 66-45 on Nov. 28 in Wellman.

Benton put up 68 shots, but the Golden Hawks outrebounded the Bobcats 40-32, led by Huber’s game-high 11 rebounds.

Pennington added a team-high 3 steals.
