Garvey finishes first in Colton Allen Memorial Tournament for a third straight year

Mid-Prairie senior Cael Garvey won all four of his matches on Saturday, to finish on top of the podium at 195 pounds in the third annual Colton Allen Memorial Tournament.

“Colton was a really close friend of mine and it feels good every time I can win this tournament,” said Garvey, who finished first in the Golden Hawks’ home tournament for a third straight year.

“It feels good to me because it just means a lot,” Garvey said. It means a lot to the community and it’s really cool.”

Garvey (11-1) won each of his first three matches in 36 seconds or less, before meeting Iowa Valley sophomore Taite Peach, who was 10-2 heading into the final match of the day.

Garvey got a takedown 15 seconds into the match and pinned his opponent in 64 seconds.

“He was very high-tempoed and wanted to come after me, so I just tried to stay in position and used my wrestling skill to kind of steer him in the way that I wanted,” Garvey explained. “That’s what helped me secure that match.”

Garvey’s teammate Terry Bordenave also got a first-place finish for Mid-Prairie at 220.

Bordenave is off to an 8-2 start this year. He was behind senior Josh Wallington at 220 last year and went 2-4 in two varsity tournaments.

“I think he did really good today,” Garvey said about his teammate. “I think the key to his improvement this year is that he’s just always in the practice room, just trying to absorb everything that he can get. He’s just always sucking in all the knowledge and trying to be the best he can.”

Bordenave won his first two matches by first-period pin and faced Iowa Valley’s Garrett Hoyt for first place in the final.

He had a 4-3 lead in the second period before getting another takedown and finishing his day with another pin.

“It felt very hard, but at the same time, I felt the easy part in him, so that’s what I took advantage of,” Bordenave said about his final match.

Mid-Prairie head coach Justin Garvey said that he was proud of the way Bordenave bounced back and competed after a tough loss in a dual with Regina on Thursday.

“Terry wrestled really good today,” he said. “He’s still making a few fundamental errors, but he’s physical enough and athletic enough to kind of work his way through it.”

The most exciting finishes of the day belonged to Mid-Prairie sophomores Tucker Miller and Gabi Robertson.

Miller fell behind 11-0 to Braxton Davis of Mediapolis before putting Davis on his back in the third period and finishing with a pin.

“That was big,” Garvey said, “just showing how to gut it out when you’re down by a lot.”

Miller finished third at 126 behind a pair of ranked wrestlers.

Robertson got a first-period takedown in her match with Iowa Valley freshman Joshua Hocamp at 106. She fell behind 4-3 before earning an escape with three seconds left in the second period.

She suffered a shoulder injury in the period, but decided to stay in the match.

“I didn’t really know what had happened. I just felt like a little pop and then shooting pain through my arm,” she said. “When the trainer was moving it, it hurt quite a bit. But I was like, ‘I have to finish this match because I think I can pull it off.’ It would be my first actual win against a guy. So I really wanted to fight for it and win it.”

Tim Grady Gymnasium got loud quite a few times on Saturday, but none louder than when Robertson ended her match with a takedown in overtime.

“I was just trying to score points, just trying to get a good shot off and not get taken down, she said. “It was really fun. My coaches and teammates were definitely pumping me up, and they were all there for me, so it was really nice.”

Mose Yoder went 2-1 for the day to finish second at 113 pounds. He faced Alburnett freshman Dawson Becker for first place and led 3-2 after one period, but Becker came back to get an escape, takedown and pin in the third.

“Mose was in a tough match there in the last round and just made a couple of fundamental errors — things that we got to shore up here moving forward,” Garvey said. “But it’s early in the season yet and it’s nothing to get too worried about. Just a couple things you’ve got to work on there and he comes out of here with a championship himself.”

Lincoln Wulf, Jarron Thomas, and Burke Berry each went 1-1 to finish second out of three in brackets at 132, 182, and 285.

Kaden Meader and Quinn Callahan each went 2-2 on Saturday to finish third at 170 and 195. Dalton Miller won two out of his five matches to finish fourth at 120. Manny Watts won a 4-3 decision over teammate Dom Shively to finish fifth at 160.

Mid-Prairie finished fifth out of six in the team standings. Alburnett finished first and Benton Community was second.

“We’ve got a really big team and we’re really young so today was a tough day for a lot of kids,” Garvey said.  “We took some on the chin and a lot of these kids are going to wrestle Monday in a JV tournament. “It’s just a matter of getting more mat time and more experience.”

Mid-Prairie at Monticello

The Golden Hawks dropped a pair of duals at Monticello on Thursday. Mose Yoder and Madison Kelly each had a quick pin at 113 and 145 for the Golden Hawks in a 51-27 loss to Regina. Landry Gingerich won a 5-2 decision at 132 pounds in the dual.

Mid-Prairie tied the host Panthers 39-39, but Monticello had more six-point wins and was awarded the tiebreaker. Kaden Meader and Terry Bordenave had pins in the match for Mid-Prairie. Colin O’Rourke won by tech fall and Quinn Callahan earned a major decision in the loss.
