Golden Hawk gals capture Indoor Track Title, boys place top 15

Staying inside to get a taste of spring competition before heading outside later this month, the Mid-Prairie boys and girls track and field teams took the trek to Ames to participate in IATC Indoor Championships at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center.  

The Indoor Championships was a two-day event, with the boys competing on March 7 and the girls competing on March 8. 

Mid-Prairie girls results 

It was a tight race for the team title in Class 2A, but when the dust settled the Golden Hawk girls found themselves on top. Scoring 50 team points, Mid-Prairie won the indoor state championship, beating out second place Regina, who scored 49 points. 

The top performer for the 1st place Hawks was Jovi Evans. Evans, a sophomore, competed in four events and finished in the top three of all of them. 

Evans captured the gold in the 200m, ending with a first-place time of 26.73, this also set a new personal best for Evans. She also raced in the 60m and crossed the finish with a time of 8.11 to take third place. Her other two events were relay races. 

The four-person team of Evans, Dakota Mitchell, Paige Safly, and Emma Lueck competed in the 800m medley and the 4x100m relay. This Mid-Prairie quartet placed second in the 800 with a time of 1:58 and placed third in the 4x100 with a time of 11:06.  

In addition to the relays, Lueck also took part in the long jump and Safly competed in the high jump. 

Lueck, a senior, placed fourth with her best jump being 16-00. Safly, also a senior, was able to clear the bar at 4-05 to tie for 17th place along with four other competitors.

Two other Hawks who performed well at Ames were seniors Behla Schmidt and Greta Sieren. Sieren raced in the 400m, the 800m and the 4x800m relay. Schmidt competed in the 60m hurdles. 

In the prelims for the 60m hurdles, Schmidt advanced to the finals by placing fifth and in the finals, she once again placed fifth with a time of 9.88.

Sieren ran a 1:03.73 in the 400m to place sixth and set a new PR in the 800m with a time of 2:28.46 to place third. In the relay Sieren, along with Annika Poll, Phoebe Shetler, and Kendal Landstrum, placed eighth with a time of 11:06.77.  

 Mid-Prairie boys results 

It was a busy Thursday for the Golden Hawk Boys as they competed in ten different indoor track and field events in Ames. At the end of the meet Mid-Prairie found themselves with 17 points to finish in 13th place in the Class 2A team standings. 

The top placement for Mid-Prairie belonged to junior Emmett Swartzentruber. 

Swartzentruber, a cross-country state champion, captured second place in the 3200m, finishing with a new PR time of 9:57. Teammate Preston Yutzy, also a junior competing in the same race, finished in 8th place with a new PR time of 10:28.

Burke Berry was another Golden Hawk to place in the top ten. Berry competed in the shot-put event and out of his six attempts his farthest throw went 44-02. 

This distance was good enough to grant him fourth place. First place went to Trevor Veenstra of Pella Christian who set a new PR with a throw of 57-02.50. 

In the 800m, junior Jayse Yoder also captured a top ten placement for the Hawks. In a field of 30, Yoder placed 6th with a final time of 2:03.14. First place was won by Mediapolis senior Logan Rosas with a time of 1:58.90. 

Mid-Prairie participated in four relay events with this best performance coming from the 4x800m. The team of Thomas Flynn, Jacob Donaldson, Jesse Stultz, and Max Swartzentruber placed 13th with a time of 9:16. 

Thomas Lueck, a freshman, was Mid-Prairie lone representative in the long jump event. Of his three attempts his farthest leap was 17-03.75, placing him in 21st. Sheldon junior Isaac Wenthe claimed gold with his first-place jump of 21-03.25.
