Returning to the top after a runner-up finish a year prior, the Mid-Prairie girls struck gold by placing first at this year’s River Valley Conference championship race at Kickers Soccer Park on Oct. 9.

For Mid-Prairie, this marks the fifth time in the last six years they have won the girls conference team title.

The Hawks first place team score was 49. Monticello, last year’s winners, placed second in the team standings with a score of 66.

“The girls ran really well. They are led by a fantastic group of seniors that have accomplished some pretty incredible things in their four years,” Mid-Prairie coach Jeremy Meyers said. “Adding another conference championship to that list was a great experience.”

The first-ranked in 2A Golden Hawks were led by the number one ranked girl in 2A, senior Danielle Hostetler.

Hostetler conquered the course in 19:59 to secure a runner up finish. Cascade sophomore Hallie Kelchen, the fifth ranked girl in 1A, was the conference meet champion with a first-place time of 19:41.

The top 30 finishers earned all-conference honors and the entire varsity lineup of the Golden Hawks met these criteria. Among the top seven finishers for the Hawks, five were seniors and two were freshmen.

“The senior girls have done a great job of passing their knowledge, traditions, and work ethic down to the younger kids,” coach Meyers said. “To be able to have our entire varsity squad recognized as all conference is a pretty incredible feat.

After Hostetler, seniors Greta Sieren and Abby Fleming placed 8th and 11th respectively with times of 20:44 and 20:52.

This was then followed by a 12th place finish by freshman Brooklyn Stutzman, a 16th place finish by senior Phoebe Shetler, a 19th place finish by freshman Kendal Landstrum, and a 26th place finish by Annika Poll.

In addition to seven Hawks earning all-conference honors, coach Meyers was selected as the River Valley Conference Coach of the Year.

“The best part about being named coach of the year was seeing how excited it made the team and hearing them cheer for me. It really is a tribute to them and to Mark Hostetler,” coach Meyers said about being named RVC COY after stepping in this year for Mark Hostetler.

“They have established such a great team culture that it was an easy transition for me and has been incredibly fun coaching them.  I just want to thank them all for making it such a fun season.”
