When the last powerful kill secured a 3A regional volleyball championship Tuesday night, Mid-Prairie’s packed home gym erupted with cheers.
Jovi Evans, a junior, jumped into the air.
Dakota Mitchell, a senior who has been the team’s starting libero since 2021, jumped around with her.
“I wanted this so bad,” Mitchell said.
Head coach Sherry Evans cried.
“I always cry when I’m happy,” she said.
The Golden Hawks’ 25-22, 21-25, 25-14, 25-23 victory over River Valley Conference rival Wilton advanced the team to next week’s state tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
The victory was a school-record 33rd win for the Golden Hawks.
Mid-Prairie (33-8) will face top-seeded Mount Vernon (42-4) in the state quarterfinals at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
