ALBURNETT
Tied at 15-15 after the opening quarter in a girls basketball battle last Thursday at Alburnett, the Golden Hawks dialed up the defense.
Alburnett was nearly held to 15 points for the rest of the game.
The Golden Hawks held the Pirates to just one point in the second quarter and cruised to a 60-34 victory.
Senior forward Callie Huber almost scored a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds, and junior guard Katelyn Harland had a game-high 6 assists.
A strong defensive effort included 4 steals by freshman guard Jeorgia Evans, 3 steals by sophomore guard Brooklyn Schneider and 2 blocks by sophomore forward Morgyn Bender. The Golden Hawks more than doubled the Pirates in rebounding, 52-24, with Huber and sophomore forward Myli Hershberger leading the way with a combined 16 boards.
Alburnett made less than 23 percent of its shots and trailed 26-16 at halftime after a one-point second quarter.
Katelynn Bowler led Alburnett (5-7) with 14 points.
Williamsburg 64,
Mid-Prairie 49
Williamsburg’s Carly Rich and Zoe Allen combined to score 28 points, leading the seventh-ranked Raiders to a 64-49 win over Mid-Prairie on Monday night in Williamsburg.
Morgyn Bender, a sophomore forward, led the Golden Hawks with 11 points.
The Raiders (10-2) double-teamed Mid-Prairie senior forwards Callie Huber and Brylee Gearhart, and held them to a combined 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Freshman Jeorgia Evans added 9 points for the Golden Hawks (8-2) and Brooklyn Schneider scored 8.
Katelynn Harland and Evans each had 3 assists.
Williamsburg’s 20-point second quarter blew the game open and sent the Raiders to their third consecutive victory.
