WELLMAN
Mid-Prairie wasted little time in securing a win in its regular season finale last Friday.
Very little time.
In the opening quarter of his final home game, senior Cain Brown, normally a receiver, sent the first touchdown pass of his career into the arms of senior Grady Gingerich on a scoring play that covered 56 yards.
Brown scored later in the first quarter himself, catching a 22-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Collin Miller.
The Golden Hawks scored four touchdowns in the first quarter against Davis County and tacked on another two scores in the second quarter.
By the time the night was over on Senior Night, the Golden Hawks had locked down a Class 2A playoff spot with a 42-6 drilling of Davis County. Every point was scored by a senior.
“Pretty much, playoff mode at this point,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh.
The Golden Hawks (5-3) will begin their playoff journey Friday night, Oct. 21, with a road trip to Goose Creek to face offensive powerhouse Northeast (4-4). The Rebels lost their last two games against Camanche and Monticello, but before that had won three straight games against Anamosa, Tipton and West Liberty.
“Northeast is a very good offensive team,” Cavanagh said. “Their QB (Gavin Kramer) plays at a high level and will be difficult to contain. It will be a long trip up there, but we are happy to be in it.”
Kramer, who is just a sophomore, has thrown for 1,623 yards and 19 touchdowns, which ranks him third in the state in 2A. He also is the Rebels’ leading rusher with 767 yards and 9 TDs.
Northeast’s offense ranks 12th in the state in scoring, but Mid-Prairie isn’t far behind at No. 17 and has topped 50 points twice this season.
The Golden Hawks would have topped 50 points again last Friday, but they went into cruise control in the second half with a 42-0 lead and a running clock.
Senior running back Braden Hartley scored touchdowns in the opening quarter of runs of 16 and 2 yards, and finished the game with 185 yards on 15 carries as Mid-Prairie’s backup players took over in the second half.
Gingerich added a second touchdown catch in the second quarter and Miller had a 43-yard scoring run. Miller also completed all three passes he threw, for 66 yards.
The Golden Hawks rolled up 336 yards on the ground. Landon Sullivan, a junior, ran for 56 yards in the second half.
Davis County’s touchdown came with 3:52 left in the game on a 12-yard run.
