KALONA

Just a few inches higher, and …

After falling behind West Branch by nine runs in the second game of a softball doubleheader July 1, Mid-Prairie’s offense bounced to life. The Golden Hawks scored three runs in the fifth inning and three more runs in the sixth.

They loaded the bases in the final inning, as West Branch clung to a 10-7 lead, and sophomore catcher Sophie Miller was at the plate. She swung and smacked a line drive headed toward left field.

Perfect.

But West Branch’s shortstop jumped up and snagged the ball. Game over.

A night of anxious moments ended just like that. West Branch swept the doubleheader after edging the Golden Hawks 7-6 in eight innings in the opener.

Dakota Mitchell and Gabi Robertson each scored twice for the Golden Hawks in the second game for Mid-Prairie.

Tessa Bombei, a rising freshman, hit a triple and a single in the opening game, and scored three times. Brenna Jehle scored twice and hit a double.

The Golden Hawks overcame a four-run deficit in the first game to send the battle into extra innings.

Doran Classic

The Golden Hawks dropped a pair of games in the Rick Doran Classic played June 29 at the University of Iowa Hawkeye Softball Complex, losing 6-2 to Davenport Central and 11-2 to Davenport West.

Dakota Mitchell and Sophie Miller each had hits and scored runs against Davenport Central.

Against Davenport West, the Golden Hawks and Falcons were tied 2-2 until West scored one run in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth inning to take control.

Claire Trimpe scored for Mid-Prairie on an infield out to give the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead in the second inning and Morgyn Bender scored on a double steal to make it 2-0.

Kadence Grout’s single started the two-run rally.

West responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score.

Durant 5

Mid-Prairie 1

Durant’s Avery Paper had two hits and scored once as the Wildcats finished off a doubleheader sweep played June 24.

The Golden Hawks scored a run in the opening inning, but were shut out after that by Durant freshman pitcher Raylynn Schlapkohl.

Mid-Prairie had three hits.
