It was the more the merrier this past week at the Kalona Golf Course as Mid-Prairie hosted its annual Golden Hawk Invitational which featured nine teams and over 50 golfers on April 15.

In their first 18-hole competition of the season, the Hawks faced stiff competition and placed fourth with an overall score of 350.

“We battled another windy day and some great competition, finishing fourth only two strokes from second,” Mid-Prairie coach Kelby Bender said. “Overall, I thought we played well for the first 18-hole meet.”

First place was won by West Branch who ended with 332. Runner-up and third place was awarded to Mt. Vernon and Wilton respectively with scores of 348 and 349.

“We did a lot of good things and made some birdies.  We also had a few mistakes that cost a few strokes,” coach Bender said. “They are all correctable and will work on them in practice and continue to improve.”

In a field of 54 medalist honors went to Wilton’s Ben Garvin (77) and runner-up medalist honors was won by West Branch’s Sawyer Jefferies (79).

With two golfers finishing in the top ten, Mid-Prairie was led by the efforts of Clayton Davidson and Bryce Henry. Davidson shot an 84, which included six made pars and one birdie, to place fifth. Henry made six pars along with two birdies to place seventh with a score of 86.

The next two highest placing Hawks who contributed to the team score were Denver Nelson and Hudson Ehrenfelt.

This duo both shot identical scores of 90 to tie for 14th place. Nelson sank in two pars and four birdies while Ehrenfelt made three pars and a single birdie.

Grayson Gingerich and Ace Peck were the final two Hawks to post scores. Gingerich finished with 91 to tie for 18th place and Peck tied for 23rd with 93.

Up next for Mid-Prairie is going on the road for a conference dual against Wilton on April 28.
