WELLMAN
After winning a pair of games by 47 and 30 points to start the season, Mid-Prairie’s unbeaten girls basketball team found itself in a battle last Friday night (Dec. 6) against Camanche.
The Golden Hawks clung to just a one-point lead in the final minute when senior forwards Callie Huber and Brylee Gearhart decided the issue.
Huber, who was the River Valley South’s leading rebounder last year, ripped a rebound away from a Camanche player and then was fouled, leading to a free throw and a game-high 20th point.
Twenty seconds later, when Huber again had the ball against a Camanche double team, she tossed the ball to Gearhart, who was fouled and then made a free throw for a 58-55 Mid-Prairie lead with 27 seconds left.
Two more free throws by Brooklyn Schneider clinched a 60-58 win for the Golden Hawks, who won their third straight game to begin the season for the first time since 2018.
Until that dramatic moment in the Golden Hawks’ home opener, a River Valley crossover game, Mid-Prairie hadn’t been pushed at all. The Golden Hawks defeated Fairfield 73-26 in their season opener and 2024 state quarterfinalist Benton Community 59-29 last week.
The Golden Hawks will go after their fourth straight win Friday at West Branch.
Camanche (1-3) and Mid-Prairie were tied 24-24 at halftime, and the second half turned into a tight, end-to-end battle that the Golden Hawks pulled out in the final two minutes.
Huber had a game-high 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Schneider added 11 points and freshman guard Jeorgia Evans had a team-high 6 steals.
Camanche senior Zoie Vogel scored 20 points and hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds that made it a two-point game.
Mid-Prairie 59
Benton 29
Freshman forward Tessa Bombei scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in the Golden Hawks’ 59-29 win at Benton Community.
The Golden Hawks scored 16 consecutive points in the second quarter and held Benton without a basket the entire quarter. Benton, a state quarterfinalist last year, was held to seven points total in the second and third quarters as Mid-Prairie sailed ahead by 30 points.
Senior center Callie Huber led Mid-Prairie with 6 rebounds, and Bombei had a team-high 4 steals.
Brooklyn Schneider added 9 points and Huber scored 8. Katelyn Harland had a game-high 5 assists.
Aubrey Kelly, the only returning starter for Benton, scored a game-high 13 points and had a game-high 7 steals.
