KALONA

The high-five greeting defined the moment.

Taking advantage of a few idle minutes between holes during last Friday’s Class 2A Regional girls golf tournament at Kalona Golf Course, Mid-Prairie’s Madi Davidson and Gabi Robertson shared their scoring cards and slapped hands.

They quickly sensed the day of Golden Hawk golf history that was unfolding.

An hour later, Davidson was back at the clubhouse after playing the round of her life.

Robertson quickly joined her.

It wasn’t long before Mid-Prairie’s other four golfers joined in the celebration on their home course. The Golden Hawks not only won the regional tournament to advance to the next round of the postseason Wednesday in West Liberty, but they smashed the team records for 9 and 18 holes.

Davidson, a sophomore who finished third in the River Valley Conference championship tournament, shot a 42 over her final nine holes. She broke her personal best for nine holes by seven strokes.

“It’s pretty awesome. I’ve never shot like that before,” Davidson said. “It’s a really good feeling.”

She finished with an 18-hole score of 98, the same score as Robertson and senior teammate Madelyn Bender.

The Golden Hawks posted a score of 395, winning the regional by 43 strokes. All six Golden Hawks had personal-best scores in either their 9- or 18-hole totals.

“That’s what you need this time of year,” Mid-Prairie coach Tracy McArtor said. “You want them to really start putting those rounds together and they did what they needed to do today.”

Elliott Debler had a 101 for Mid-Prairie, Addison English was one more shot back and Alexa Huber carded a 103.

“Coming into it, we knew we had a really good chance of moving on,” Bender said. “After I found out Madi and Gabi and I all had 98s, I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, we’re all doing great.’ It doesn’t even necessarily matter that much what the last person’s score was. I knew we were moving on and I was so happy.”

Davidson carded a 56 over her first nine holes, including scoring 8 on a pair of holes, but she trimmed 14 shots in her second nine. She had three pars and could have even scored a 40 over the last nine holes if a chip shot hadn’t spun off the green at the 8th hole after a near-perfect approach shot.

“I think I focused more and I tried to have more fun,” she said of the second nine. “It was just a much better experience the second round.”

Olivia Hines of Mediapolis was the tournament’s medalist, carding an 88.

Davidson’s 42 was the lowest 9-hole score of the day.

Mid-Prairie competes for a state tournament berth in the final regional tourney Wednesday at West Liberty Golf & Country Club.
