Hartzler continues stellar freshman season for Highland boys

The Highland boys’ track team finished third at the Mike Kautz Invite in Lone Tree behind another set of strong finishes for the Huskies’ distance runners, continuing a trend that has lasted all season.

Noah Hartzler and Brock Nebergall led the way for Highland, claiming first and second place in the 800m while taking part in two second-place relays, the 4x800m with Brody Beinhart and Jacob Schneider and the 4x400m with Beinhart and Elvin Hernandez.

Despite his high finishes, Hartzler still saw areas for improvement, particularly on the 4x400m relay, where he took the lead from Columbus only to give it back on the final stretch, “We all ran really well and my teammates put me in a good spot. I started off a little too quick and lost a lot of energy up the straight. If I would have kept a little slower pace, I think I would have had enough left in the tank that I probably could have had that.”

Highland boys’ coach Logan Moeller said that, despite just being a freshman, that attention to detail combined with his early success has led Hartzler to emerge as a leader within the program, “Noah’s been showing out… It’s just awesome to think of his potential, his continued growth and development as a runner. To be doing this already at this stage is really impressive.”

The sprint medley relay team of Beinhart, Dawson Bell, Caleb Wheeler and Nate Clark also took second place while the 4x100m team of Clark, Chase Robinson, Will Boileau and Jackson Robinson took third.

“It just shows their commitment to the sport,” Moeller said of his relay teams. “They are invested and they know they can make some noise, meet in and meet out. They want to improve themselves.”

Boileau finished third individually as well in the shot put while Hernandez finished third in the 400m.

The Huskies will return to the track on Thursday as they travel to Lisbon.
