Hawks compete for conference gold at RVC Championships

Before the annual state qualifiers, the Mid-Prairie boys and girls track and field teams went on the road to participate in the River Valley Conference Championships taking place at Dean Nelson Field in Monticello on May 3.

Winning the team title on the boys side was Bellevue with a score of 86. The hosting school, Monticello, was the runner-up with 78 points. 

On the girls side Tipton was the big winner, winning the team title with a first place score of 114. The runner-up spot was claimed by Maquoketa with 104 points. 

Girls Results 

Competing in a field of 15, the Golden Hawks were one of three teams to score 100 or more points. Scoring 102 points as a team, Mid-Prairie ended the conference championship meet in third place. 

The quartet of Jovi Evans, Emma Lueck, Dakota Mitchell, and Danielle Hostetler gave Mid-Prairie their lone first place finish of the day. Outracing everyone in a field of 11, the Hawks placed first in the 1600m medley relay with a time of 4:18.

In addition to being a part of a winning relay team Evans also continued to show her superb speed this season, taking second place in the 100m (12.85) and the 200m (26.01) dash.  

When it came to the longer running events Hostetler and Greta Sieren finished in third and fourth respectively in the 800m run with times of 2:23 and 2:26. 

The high jump event saw Page Safly, a senior, tie for second place, clearing the bar at 5-01. In the discus event Harper Pacha placed third with a throw of 111-09.  Pacha also came in fifth in the shot put with a distance of 34-10.50. 

Boys Results 

Mid-Prairie collected 63 team points to place 5th in a field of 15 at the conference meet in Monticello.

The Golden Hawks were led by a pair of first place finishes captured by Emmett Swartzentruber. 

Swartzentruber, a standout junior, showcased his outstanding long distance running ability once again, placing first in the 1600m (4:38) and the 3200m (9:54). The 3200m run featured 14 participants and Swartzentruber was the only one to cross the finish line in under 10 minutes. 

Jayse Yoder also gave Mid-Prairie a pair of top three finishes. Yoder placed third in the 400m dash and the 800m run with times of 51.65 and 2:05 respectively. 

Joining forces for the 4x800m relay, the four-person team of Swartzentruber, Yoder, Thomas Flynn, and Preston Yutzy placed second with a time of 8:32.  

When it came to field events Landon Sullivan (long jump), Josh Turner (high jump), and Burke Berry (shot put) all took third place in their respective events. 

Up next for the Mid-Prairie boys and girls track and field teams is the 2A state qualifiers being held at Eddyville-Blakesburg Fremont on May 9.
