At the July 6 meeting, Kalona Rotarians thanked Tina Hershberger for her year as president and welcomed Dean Miller as the l999-2000 president.
Other officers and board members are Phyllis Litwiller, vice president; Mike Brenneman, secretary; Larry Kern, treasurer; board members Tina Hersberger, Tom Jepson, Doug Morgan and Charlie Yoder. Going off the board was Phil Marner.
Hershberger’s year
Hersberger thanked the club for their participation to make her year of leading the club an active and successful year. She listed activities including Out Door Classroom at Kalona Elementary, Partners in Reading program at the Kalona Library, area Rotary golf outing, Fall Festival gate keepers, sponsorship of three sophomore students to attend the RYLA Conference in Des Moines in November, hosting Senior Men’s Thanksgiving Dinner at Kalona Mennonite Church, joint Valentine meal with Washington and Wellman Rotarians, omelet breakfast in March with funds benefiting Kalona Library and First Responders, quilt show set up, helping Chamber with street clean-up and City-Wide Clean-Up and arranging for a grant for the Kalona Library.
Other contributions by the Rotary this past year included $2,009 to FAMSCO, $450 sponsorship of Simon Estes student, donation of $250 per year for three years to Mid-Prairie High School Renaissance program to give incentive gifts to students who have made academic achievements, donation of $81 to Middle School for 6th grade students to attend Cedar Rapids Symphony and contributions to help two students participate in the People to People trip to Australia.
The Rotary Club also named its first Teacher of the Year this spring.
