Highland boys wrestling make season debut at Washington Quad

WASHINGTON

A trio of duals awaiting the Huskies in their season opener. Highland traveled to Washington to compete in a quad on Dec. 3 and it served as the first contest of the season for the Huskies. 

The host school, Washington, served as the first competition for the Huskies and despite some solid performances they were defeated, 56-24.

Highland won four matches by fall with those wins coming from Jose Ramirez (1:08 over Sam Mason-Goff), Cash Cole (5:30 over Max Anderson), Aiden Yoder (2:34 over Xavi Recendez), and Alan Nass (49 seconds over Brandon Cortes.

Going against Mid-Prairie in their second dual, the Huskies were defeated, 45-30.

Highland won three matches by forfeit and two matches by fall. Yoder won his second match by fall (3:39 over Parker English) and Brock Thomann won his first match of the year by fall (22 seconds over Blake Malichky).

The final dual of the night was against WACO. Both teams tied with a final score of 42 but the tiebreaker went to the Warriors.

The Huskies won one match by forfeit and six matches by fall.

Those wins came from Issac Kleese (1:05 over Tyler Rodgers), Jack Cave (53 seconds over Vincent Craun), Yoder (17 seconds over Jayden Maish), Mason Lavely (1:37 over Lane Bachman), Nass (3:20 over Deacon Bird), and Caleb Wheeler (35 second over Anthony Carroll).

 

Willard Howell Invitational

Competing in their first tournament of the season, the Huskies traveled to Wapello to compete in the 60th Willard Howell Invitational on Dec. 7.

As a team, Highland captured 60 points to finish in eighth place in the final standings with the team title being won by Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont who posted a first place score of 211. Second and third place belonged to Wilton and Mount Pleasant respectively with scores of 195 and 155.

The top performer for Highland was Cash Cole, who placed second in the 113 lbs bracket.

Cole went 2-1, winning his quarterfinal match in 3:07 and his semifinal match in 5:14. In the first-place match, Cole was defeated by E-B-F’s Slater Thomas by fall in 1:12.

Isaac Kleese, a senior, placed third in the 214 lbs bracket. Kleese went 3-1 at Wapello. His first win came by major decision, 12-3, and his consolation semifinal win came by fall in 1:03. Kleese then won once again by fall (1:54) in the third-place match over Mount Pleasant’s William Birdsell.

It was a fourth-place finish for Brock Thomann. Thomann won his first match by fall in 2:42 but then lost his semifinal match by tech fall. In the consolation semis, Thomann won by fall in 3:49 but then fell in the third-place match by decision, 16-11, to E-B-F’s Kenton Stout.
