Seven Highland High School wrestlers took their places on the medal stand Saturday at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference tournament in Lone Tree.

“We had a good day,” coach Derick Ball said Monday. “We worked our way through our rough patch.”

Bryce Thompson was the top finisher for Highland with a silver medal in the 106 weight class.

Thompson’s only loss came in the finals, giving up a 14-7 decision to Lane Scorpil of Columbus Community and Winfield-Mount Union.

The sophomore got to the finals with falls over Elijah Vance of Notre Dame and Mak Kennedy of Mediapolis.

In the 113-weight class, Easton Schlabaugh won the bronze medal, pinning Jeffrey Hoback of Columbus Community just over 30 seconds into the first round.

In the quarter finals, Schlabaugh pinned Logan Baker of Pekin in just 39 seconds.

Winning a third-place medal in the 120 weight class for Highland was Carlos Valenzuela who pinned his opponent in the second period of the consolation round.

Valenzuela, in his freshman year, got to the consolation final with a pair of falls.

Wrestling at 195, Justin Sosa pinned Kainoa Seumanutafa of Wapello in less than a minute in the consolation round.

Eathan Paisley had a fourth place finish in the 126 weight class as did Cael Yeggy in the 182-pound class.

Logan Bonebrake took fifth place in the 132 weight class.

Ball said that Yeggy had a tough day, and he is planning for the senior to have a better day at sectionals on Saturday.

Ball pointed to Kolton Miller as a standout who did not reach the medal stand.

“Kolton Miller never wrestled before,” the coach said.

He was wrestling in the 152 pound class, perhaps the deepest in the conference.

Miller pancaked his opponent in the second-round match but did not get the pin call from the ref. He lost the round on points.

Ball said he is preparing his team for the sectional tournament this Saturday at Mediapolis.
