RIVERSIDE

The first day of school in Highland’s new four-day week will be August 23 for the 2024-25 school year.

The school year will end May 28, two days after Memorial Day.

The 2024-25 school calendar was presented during Monday’s meeting of the Highland School Board, which included public hearings for the school calendar and the Fiscal Year 2025 budget.

The Board approved the calendar after approving the move to a four-day week earlier this year, effective with the 2024-25 school year.

Despite moving to a four-day week, next year’s calendar includes 17 Fridays that would be used for staff development and five Fridays that would include classes. The calendar also includes a three-day Thanksgiving Week break, a 10-day winter break beginning December 23, a three-day spring break in March and a two-day break wrapped around Easter Weekend.

If needed, snow make-up days are scheduled for a number of Fridays.

While school will be in session Monday through Thursday most weeks, there are five Fridays during the school year that classes will be held, including the opening day of school August 23.

FY25 Budget

The Board approved the proposed budget for the 2024-25 school year.

Instruction services are set for $6.1 million, an increase of more than $500,000 from the current school year. Support services are budgeted for $3.2 million, an increase of about $200,000.

The property tax levy for schools is just under $13 per $1,000 of assessed property.

Board Actions

The Board approved the district’s Affirmative Action Plan.

The Board approved the appointments of Lyndsey Carter, secondary schools math teacher; Dawn Richardson, Special Education associate; and Erin Bramble, girls wrestling coach.

The Board approved several policy updates.

Next Meeting

The board will hold its next formal meeting at 5 p.m. May 13. A work session is scheduled for April 22.
