Highland wrestlers defeat WMU

The Husky wrestlers came home with a win over Winfield Mount Union, but lost to Columbus in a dual meet, Dec. 9.

Against Winfield Mount Union, the Huskies outscored the Wolves, 57-16.

The dual match was contested in four matches. Highland lost only one match.

Coach Shawn Kreman said, “The kids that wrestled, I felt wrestled fairly hard, Adam Rees with the only loss, was giving up nearly 12 pounds to an experienced senior Mark Calvin. It was a bit of revenge from last year when they defeated us pretty handily.”

In 119 lbs. class, Highland’s Ryan Gerot was a winner over Sean Nelson. Gerot won by a fall.

At 125 lbs. Mark Vazquez of 125 lbs. won by fall to Dustin Curtis.

David Schott won by decision, 9-8, to Luke Vantiger at 152 lbs.

Adam Rees was defeated by Mark Calvin, who won by decision, 12-4.

Highland forfeited 103 lbs. and 189 lbs. classes.

Winfield had seven missing weights classes due to unspecified reasons.

Columbus defeated Highland 36-24.

According to Coach Kreman, this dual match had several interesting match ups.

In the low weights, Dustin Schneider, who wrestled Zack Pugh for the second time this season, after falling to Pugh on Saturday, had the chance for revenge.

Schneider fell by a 2-7 score.

At 125 lbs. Mark Vazquez avenged his loss by fall on Saturday to Enrique Avila, by beating him with the score of 17-9.

Coach Kreman said, “The wrestlers gave a decent effort tonight, losing some pivotal matches hurt us with the overall team scores, but really when it came right down to it we just needed to compete hard at those given weight classes.”

Coach Kreman expected more from his younger wrestlers.

“Mentally the younger guys need to start believing in their abilities and complete their moves in practice, so that when they happen in a meet its not new to them.”

Highland’s dual record is 2-2 and in conference the Huskies are 1-2.
