The Highland boys basketball team set three records this past weekend. The Huskies won their first two games of the season.

Their first victory of the season came Dec. 10 against New London. The Huskies defeated New London, 64-58.

Senior Corey Chapula posted a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Highland held the Tigers scoreless for the first 4 1/2 minutes of the game, which helped build their lead to 13 points at the end of the first quarter.

Joe Poch had a season high 10 assists.

Highland out rebounded New London, 36-24.

The final margin of victory (16 points) was the largest by the Husky boys since the 1996-97 season.

According to Coach Dan Bontrager, defensive pressure and rebounding were the key to Highland’s second victory over Cardinal, 63-48.

Again, Chalupa led the team with 27 points and nine rebounds.

This was Chalupa’s third game of scoring 24 points or more.

Joe Poch and Matt Bonebrake led the offense each with six assists.

Mike Poch contributed eight points, five rebounds four steals and a blocked shot.

Back-to back wins were the first for Highland since January of 1996.

It was also the first road win for the Huskies since January 1997.

The Huskies came so close to a victory, Dec. 7.

The Highland boys team lost to Mediapolis, 69-60.

The Huskies led most of the first three quarters.

Chalupa, Mike Poch and James Musack led their attack. Chalpula scored 24 points. Mike Poch and Musack added 19 and 13 points respectively. Musack led the defense with 10 boards. Mike Poch grabbed four steals.

Joe Poch dished out four assists.

A couple of turnovers in the Mediapolis press in the last minute of the third quarter allowed the Bulldogs to score the last six points of the quarter to take a three point lead into the fourth quarter.

After a Mediapolis time-out with 2:28 to go in the game, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to stretch a 61-58 lead.

“Considering that we lost to Mediapolis by a combined 72 points in our two games last year, in some respects I am very pleased with the progress that we have made so far,” said Coach Bontrager.

“The next step will be to learn how to play with a lead and maintain our composure down the stretch of close games.”
