WAPELLO
After Leah Bontrager struck out a batter in the second inning Monday, Hillcrest Academy coach Kent Blossom marched out to the pitching mound.
Bontrager was puzzled.
“I didn’t even know what he was doing out there,” she said later, laughing.
Blossom took the ball from Bontrager, informed her that the strikeout was her 250th and marched back to the dugout as the game went on with another ball.
Bontrager, who had no idea that she was about to reach her 250th strikeout, appreciated the recognition, especially, she said, because she has reached a personal high in strikeouts (79) her senior season. She got four of them in a win over Mediapolis earlier this season, a victory that was Hillcrest’s first in four years.
Monday, she struck out six in the first game of a doubleheader at Wapello.
The Ravens dropped both games, 12-2 and 11-2.
Hillcrest (4-17) plays at Highland in a first-round Class 1A tournament game Friday.
