Hora wants schools to go back to basics

Heather Hora, Riverside, said she is running for State Representative as a republican in this year’s primary election with emphasis on family values, lower taxes and concern about over legislation on agriculture.

Hora, 52, spent her younger years in Minneapolis but then moved back to Riverside in 7th grade and later graduated from Highland high school. She then attended Ellsworth College, where she received her real estate license. Hora then met her future husband, Kurt, and the two both decided to become full time farmers.

Heather and Kurt are parents to three children (Presley, 14; Elizabeth, 12; and John, 10) who all help with daily chores around the house and work on the farm. Hora believes that teaching children to have a great work ethic and instilling integrity and character are important to both her and Kurt.

Hora is running for the Iowa House for many reasons, but she believes that protecting the children is the most important.

“Our children are being exposed to and being taught things that no child should be exposed to and taught at school,” Hora said. “We need to protect them and have our schools get back to the basics of teaching reading, writing and arithmetic.”

Hora also wants to take a closer look at the education system to figure out why schools are failing.

“I believe in our public schools; I am a product of public school but what we have today looks nothing like what I remember,” Hora said.

Hora ran against Senator Kevin Kinney four years ago.

Hora has been active in several state organizations. She was a member of the Iowa Pork Board for 6 years, the Washington County Pork Board for 16 years. She has also served on the Iowa Center for Agriculture Safety and Health Advisory council. She has also been an active member of the Washington School advisory Committee and the Parent Teachers Organization.

Her husband has served as president of Iowa Corn Growers Assn and the family was the first Washington County family to earn the Wergin Good Neighbor award.

They are also active members of the City Point Church in Washington.

Hora was recently endorsed by Governor  Kim Reynolds.
