Huskies end the year with a loss to conference leader Winfield Mt-Union

It was the last game of the year for Highland and they were matched up against undefeated Southeast Iowa Super Conference leader Winfield-Mt Union, a daunting matchup fosure.

The Huskies could not match the potent offense of the Wolves and found themselves in a hole too steep to climb out of which led to Highland being defeated at home by Winfield Mt-Union, 57-23, on December 20.

Scoring no points in the first quarter the Huskies were on the receiving end of an 18-0 run to start the game. Getting off to such a slow start made it difficult for the Huskies to mount any type of comeback and they went into halftime down 34-9.

“We got hit by a mack truck,” Highland coach Jody Fink said after the game. “[Winfield-Mt Union] came out and slapped us in the face and we didn’t respond. We will learn from this performance and move on.”

The Wolves seemed to never let go of the gas pedal as they went into the fourth quarter leading 44-17. The Huskies, with less than two minutes left in the final quarter, subbed out their starters.

As they left the court the home crowd, who appreciated the effort the team showed, gave the starters a round of applause.

“Winfield is a good team, take nothing away from them,” Fink said. “We just didn’t come tonight to play or match the intensity they brought to the game.”

Highland junior forward Kerra Longbine was the leading scorer for the Huskies with six points. Longbine collected five rebounds with four of them being offensive boards.

Cooling off from her career-high 32 point game against Wapello Highland junior Sarah Burton, who is averaging 17.5 points on the season, was held in check by Winfield-Mt Union’s defense, scoring only four points in the loss. Burton led the team in steals with five and managed to snag five rebounds.

The next time the Huskies play it will be a new year since they are taking a break for the holidays. Highland (3-5) will travel to Columbus Junction to face conference opponent Columbus (4-5) on January 3.

There will be little time to rest since next up in the same week they will be on the road to battle English Valleys (5-3) on January 5.
