Huskies outlast Bears, win back and forth affair with Ravens

It came down to the wire, but the Huskies (8-4) proved to be resilient at home in a non-conference showdown against English Valleys (7-3) as Highland collected a narrow 38-37 win over the Bears on Jan. 9.

“We started off well tonight but relaxed and didn’t keep our intensity up the entire night,” Highland head coach Jody Fink said about the game against EV. “Again, the turnovers raised their ugly head and kept the game very close.  We did a much better job of identifying players and rebounding the ball tonight but still much work to do.”

Highland led for most of this contest but in the fourth quarter Highland saw its lead overtaken by EV with the Bears gaining the upper hand by a single point, but a Kamryn Fink two-point shot and a three-pointer from Hailey Brun put Highland back up by two.

With 24 seconds left in the game, Katelyn Thomann split a pair of free throws to raise the Highand lead to three and while EV scored again to cut its deficit to one, it ended up being the last shot of the game as time officially expired.

“Shooting was a little better than it had been the past few games but always room to improve and we did a better job of closing out with a hand in their face,” coach Fink said.

Highland was led by Fink and Emersyn Schultz who scored 15 and 12 points respectively. Fink also collected a team high 16 rebounds to earn a double double on the night, her ninth of the season.

Breaking out the broom on the road, the Huskies defeated the Ravens for the second time this season in a highly competitive affair on Jan. 10.

“It was back and forth all night,” Highland head coach Jody Fink said about the game against Hillcrest. “Sloppy at times with many turnovers, but had some bright lights and performances also.”

It was neck and neck through two quarters with Hillcrest going into the half with a slim one-point lead. In the second half the Huskies went ahead thanks to a 19-point third quarter which allowed them to enter the final frame with a three-point advantage.

In the fourth quarter the Huskies staved off the Hillcrest comeback to take the win by six and earn their sixth conference win of the season.

“Hailey Brun did a great job disrupting the Hillcrest offense on top of the zone,” coach Fink said. “Mackenzie Davis pulled out of a slump offensively and was a huge lift to our offense, and then Emersyn Schultz continued her 3-point assault.”

Davis had an impressive night on offense, leading Highland with 19 points, going 8/11 from the field. It was a double double night for Brun who scored 17 and came away with 14 steals.  Kamryn Fink excelled at crashing the boards once again, pulling down a team best 12 rebounds.

Hillcrest was led by Malia Yoder (15), Claire Withrow (11), and Delaney Shaw (10) who all scored in the double digits. Yoder and Shaw also grabbed 15 and 12 rebounds respectively to earn double doubles. Yoder also led in assists (7) and steals (4).

Up next for Highland (9-4) is a home conference clash against SEISC North leader Columbus (11-2) on Jan. 17.
