SIGOURNEY

The Highland Huskies are cranking up their offense as they head into the Class 1A baseball tournament.

The Huskies scored 37 runs in three victories this week, including 14-1 Wednesday in the regular-season finale at Sigourney.

They have won 15 of their last 17 games and host Montezuma in a Class 1A first-round tournament game Saturday at 7 p.m.

“There’s room to improve,” Huskies head coach Seth Milledge said after an 8-3 win at Winfield-Mt. Union on Monday. “We’ve got to sharpen some things up here before district play.”

Seniors Connor Grinstead and Brenton Bonebrake, and junior Tyler Thompson each had three hits in the win at Sigourney. The Huskies (19-3) totaled 16 hits and scored 11 runs in the first three innings against Sigourney (17-4).

Logan Bonebrake hit a home run and Luke Miller drove in two runs.

Highland starter Chase Schultz struck out six in four innings.

The Huskies scored 12 runs in the fifth inning to score a walk-off 10-run win Tuesday over BGM on Senior Night.

A senior-dominated starting lineup included Connor Grinstead, Luke Miller, Chase Schultz, Trevor McFarland, Kaige Vonnahme, Brenton Bonebrake, Carson Netser and Spencer Grout combining for 10 hits and 10 runs.

McFarland hit a home run.

Schultz drove in three runs and scored three times. Vonnahme and McFarland also drove in three runs.

Juniors Ethan Paisley and Peyton Yeggy pitched for the Huskies.

Ahead by three runs in the final inning of its game Monday night at Winfield-Mt. Union, the Highland Huskies quickly ended the drama.

Luke Miller drove home Brenton Bonebrake with a run, starting a five-run rally that helped send Highland to an 8-3 victory.

The Huskies launched an 11-hit attack three nights after they were shut out by third-ranked New London.

Chase Schultz, a senior pitcher, hit a home run, drove in three runs and gave up just one hit in 3.2 innings against W-MU before giving way to relievers Logan Bonebrake and Ethan Paisley.  Schultz struck out six.

“Did a very good job. He was efficient,” Milledge said of Schultz, who had less than 40 pitches when he was pulled so that the Huskies could use other players. “Just a workday for him.”

Schultz, Trevor McFarland and Kaige Vonnahme each had two hits for the Huskies.

Miller, Brenton Bonebrake and Connor Grinstead each had stolen bases.

W-MU (2-15) scored all three runs in the seventh inning.
