Huskies sweep Falcons

Highland opened its conference slate with a three-set victory at Louisa-Muscatine on Thursday. The Huskies earned the sweep with 25-22, 25-17, and 25-19 set wins over the Falcons.

Grace Prybil was 12 of 13 serving with three aces, and had a team-high six assists in the road win. Sarah Burton led the Huskies with eight kills and no errors on 24 attempts.

Highland head coach Gina Trower said that her team “came in with a positive attitude and a heavy determination to run the L-M court.”

Louisa-Muscatine had taken the last three matchups in the series. It was Highland’s first win over the Falcons since 2018, and the Huskies’ first sweep of L-M since 2016.

Trower, who is in her third season coaching the Huskies, said that the team’s court culture has changed over the past few seasons.

“By court culture, I mean that we set a standard and every athlete in the gym and on the court follows and meets that standard,” she explained. “When it came to the L-M game, the team held themselves to the highest extension of those standards.”

Mackinze Hora led the team in serve efficiency with a perfect 16 for 16 night, and Jalynn Brown had a team-high five aces. Hora and Burton led the Huskies with 12 digs apiece. Six different Huskies recorded a kill, including Jessica Kraus and MyLei Smith, who each had two.

The Huskies improved to 3-2 and 1-0 in conference play with the win.

Trower said the sweep of L-M in the conference opener would “help set the future standard for the rest of Highland’s season.”

The Huskies hosted Mediapolis (1-3) in another conference match on Tuesday, September 7 and will be back on the road at Pekin (2-3) on Thursday.
