RIVERSIDE
The Iowa 1A girls basketball tournament began with a scare at Highland High School.
In a promising season during which the Huskies have won 16 games for the first time in nine years, their freshman star went down with an injury in the opening quarter of its opening-round regional game against Wapello on Feb. 13.
The result was a partially dislocated thumb for Kamryn Fink, the second-leading freshman scorer in Iowa.
No matter.
Fink scored a double-double, a game-high 25 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, in the Huskies’ 48-29 win over Wapello that sent Highland to Tuesday’s regional quarterfinals against rival Hillcrest Academy.
“Right now,” Huskies head coach Jody Fink said, “we’re in the middle of survive and advance.”
Fink hit three 3-pointers and had 4 steals.
A day later, an examination revealed that the thumb was not broken.
So, make that a survive.
Hailey Brun, a sophomore, added 14 points and 4 steals for the Huskies.
“Hailey brings a good defensive game,” Jody Fink said. “Really used her speed and her hands.”
Emersyn Schultz, a junior, had 11 rebounds and 5 steals.
Of Highland’s starters, only forward Katie Herrig is a senior. All the scoring was done by a junior, two sophomores and a freshman.
“Getting the confidence. Sit there and get that first one,” Jody Fink said. “We’ve been in some close ones before this in the last couple of years and had opportunities and just fell short. We’ve got to get that confidence back knowing, ‘Hey, this is what we can do.’ And with the youth of our team going through and everything, that was a good job on their part.”
After taking a 21-12 lead at halftime, the Huskies scored the first seven points of the third quarter to blow the game open. Brun hit a 3-pointer in that stretch. Then, dislocated thumb and all, Kamryn Fink drove the lane for a pair of baskets during a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter.
The win sent the Huskies to a second consecutive home game Tuesday.
“It felt good,” Brun said. “It really does.”
