Hillcrest sprinter Quang Huynh has improved his times in each meet so far during his first track season.
In Tuesday’s meet at Williamsburg, Huynh set new season best times in the 100 and 200-meter races – running in spikes for the first time.
“This has been a great learning experience for Quang,” Hillcrest coach Marty Gingerich said. He is new to Iowa, new to Hillcrest Academy and he continues to make strides in learning English as he extends his time here.
“He has a strong desire to learn and to get better. Quang works hard in practice and through that has found some of his strengths some of his weaknesses. He has lowered his time in both events from his first outing.”
With the Hillcrest soccer team also in action on Tuesday, Quang was the only runner for the Raven boys in Williamsburg. He finished the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.12 and had his best finish of the day in the 200-meter dash, a 20th-place finish of 28.76.
“He has worked on block starts but hasn’t mastered that enough to use them in a meet,” Gingerich said. “It will be fun to watch his progress as the season advances.”
Madeline Fox had the best finish for the Hillcrest girls, coming in 16th in the 400-meter hurdles with a new season-best time of 1:23.35. She also set a new career-best in the 100-meter hurdle race, finishing 21st with a time of 20.35.
Ivana Ebersole set a new personal-best in the discus with a 22nd-place throw of 53-03, and Sarah Miller finished 29th in the shot put with a throw of 24-07.
