IMS girls fall just short at SEISC golf

Iowa Mennonite School finished just seven shots off the pace at the 1999 South East Iowa Super Conference small school girls golf meet Monday.

The meet, held at Winfield, was won by the host Lady Wolves. Winfield completed a sweep of the small school girls dual (5-0) and meet titles by firing a 429.

“The girls played pretty decent,” IMS co-coach Phil Ropp said. “Lori had a pretty solid day and I thought Katie, Erin and Veronica all finished pretty well, too.”

IMS junior Lori Miller made a solid bid for the meet medalist crown. She and Winfield’s Erin Suter finished the opening 18 holes with twin 101s, forcing a three-hole playoff.

Miller ran into trouble on the opening hole of the playoff, according to Ropp. She took a five on the par three number one. From that point, Suter held on for the win.

Junior Katie Hochstedler made quite an impression as well, finishing third in the medalist race with a 104. Veronica Erb also came in in the top 15, finishing 13th with a 122.

Erin Miller added a 109 to round out IMS’ 436 total.

“I was especially impressed by the way our girls played the number nine hole,” Ropp said. “That hole seemed to cause everybody but us a lot of trouble as you had water on the left and were out-of-bounds on the right. It is a tricky little hole, but our girls played the hole very well on the front and back nines.”

All but two of the six Maroon and Black girls shot a better score on the back nine than the front. IMS was in the running on both nines as they trailed the Lady Wolves only 215-219 after the front nine was completed.

“We were right in there all day,” Ropp said.

With Class 1A district action loming next Monday at Kalona, Ropp was happy to see his girls play well at the conference meet.

“We just need to keep this roll going into the district meet,” he said.

New London finished a distant third, scoring a 482.
