Mennonite Historical Society meets
The annual fall meeting of the Mennonite Historical Society is Tuesday, November 9, starting at 7 p.m. in the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church, Kalona. A short business session includes election of two board members. The program features Reminiscing of the Kinsinger Families, given by descendants of Bishop Peter Kinsinger and his brother, Elias Kinsinger, of Johnson and Iowa Counties. Refreshments will be served and the program is open to the public.
Festival of Trees planned by Mercy Foundation
The 8th annual Festival of Trees, sponsored by Mercy Hospital Foundation, is set for November at the Radisson Inn, Interstate 80 and Highway 1, Iowa City. As part of the program, special events are set for November 19 and November 20. A luncheon, style show and mini-auction are 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., a Silver Bells Tea, from 3-5 p.m. that features Legends of the Holidays, and Family Night at 6:30 p.m., November 19. A gala and live auction is November 20, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Safe Kids Coalition sponsors safety check
The Johnson County Safe Kids Coalition will sponsor a safety seat check Saturday, October 30, from 1-3 p.m. in at the Hargrave-McEleney GM dealership, Highway 1, Iowa City. Christie Vilsack speaker at Coralville luncheon
Christie Vilsack, Iowa’s First Lady, is the featured speaker for the Iowa Women’s Foundation luncheon Friday, November 12, in the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, Coralville. Telephone directory recycling service set
McLeod USA telephone directories may be recycled through November 26 by depositing them in containers in the parking lots at Hy-Vee Food Stores in Iowa City and Coralville. In addition, residents in Johnson County with curbside recycling service provided by Waste Management of Iowa, may recycle the old telephone books during regular curbside pick-up. Schut elected president of national group
Arthur Schut, executive director of Mid-Eastern Council on Chemical Abuse (MECCA), was elected president of the National Coalition of State Alcohol and Drug Treatment and Prevention Associations, a coalition of state associations of substance abuse providers. Schut has represented Iowa on the National Coalition and served as president of the Iowa Substance Abuse Program Directors’ Association.
