Yoder elected officer for lumber group

Edward Yoder, vice president of Kalona Builders Supply, was elected second vice chairman of Northwestern Lumber Association. He previously was president of the Iowa Lumber Association and has 33 years of experience and service in the retail lumber business. He also is a member of the Iowa City Home Builders and is a board member of the Kalona Golf Club.

Woodin owned quilt among 100 best

The Sunflower Quilt, made by Dr. Jeannette Dean Throckmorton and owned by Marilyn Woodin, is among the 100 best quilts in the International Quilting Show Festival’s 25th anniversay exhibit in Houston October 20-24. In addition, the quilt is featured in the show’s extensive catalogue that celebrates 100 years of the art of quiltmaking.

College Night set at Washington High

Representatives from 50 community colleges, colleges, universities, private technical and business schools and the armed services will be at College Night in Washington High School October 18 from 6:30-8 p.m. to talk with interested students and their families. It is sponsored by Washington, Mid-Prairie, Columbus Junction, Highland, Keota and WACO high schools, the American Association of University Women and the Washington National Guard.

Halloween Hike planned at Marr Park October 23

The Washington County Conservation Board will hold its annual Halloween Hike Saturday, October 23 at Marr Park (Highway 92, one mile west of Ainsworth) at 7 and 8 p.m. Theme is The Mists of Time and focuses on Iowa’s natural heritage as presented by students from Iowa’s bicentennial in 2046 enact the last 200 years of the state’s history. There will be skits, a hike featuring “time escapees” and refreshments at Mary Marr Lodge. Take a lawn chair or blanket and mugs for hot cocoa.

IMS sets fall concert

Iowa Mennonite School’s annual fall music concert is Friday, October 15, starting at 7 p.m. The program features the orchestra, Chorale, Concert Choir and various other ensembles under the direction of Bradley Kauffman. The program is open to the public without charge.

Mediation Program seeks volunteers to aid cases

The Johnson County Small Claims Court Mediation Program seeks volunteers to be trained to mediate small claims cases. The program provides a free, two-day training session for those interested in serving as a volunteer mediator in Iowa City. The training is October 22, 8:30-4:30 p.m. and October 23, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Grant Wood AEA, 200 Holiday Road, Coralville. For more information, call Annie Tucker, 319-351-6715.

Beenblossom elected county chairman

Marty Beenblossom of Washington recently was re-elected Washington County memorial chairman by the American Heart Association of Iowa. Memorial chairmen, named by the area regional director, are selected on the basis of past involvement with the Association. They are responsible for coordinating memorial contributions made to the Association, as well as acknowledging donations. Donations may be sent to Beenblossom at Jones Funeral Home, Inc., 116 East Main St., Washington, Iowa 52353.

Puppets and Pastries at Owl Glass Puppetry

Puppets and Pastries: Dessert Theatre for Adults, featuring the Eulenspiegel Puppets, Drabbletails Fancy, a women’s a cappella singing group and the sweet concoctions of Chef Mickey of Chef Mickey’s Catering Shoppe, is set for Saturday, October 16, at 8 p.m. at Owl Glass Puppetry Center, 319 North Calhoun, West Liberty. Tickets include desserts and beverages. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 319-627-2487.

Bagpipe music, lore in Washington

John Michael Hughes, a piper, and Fingal, his Scottie, both of St. Paul, Minnesota, will present a special program about bagpipe music and lore in the Washington YMCA/YWCA Thursday, October 21, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. There is no charge, but free-will donations will be accepted.
