Band students seek used instruments
Lessons and practice for 5th grade band will start shortly, and beginning students need instruments, new or used. If you have a used instrument you would sell, call Kalona Elementary School, 319-656-2243, by September 13 and leave a message for director Norman Brooks including your name, instrument, general condition, price and a telephone number. A donated instrument is tax-deductible.
Bank offers bus trip

Scottish ancestry topic for genealogy group
The Rev. Scott Nesbitt is the featured speaker, talking about My Scottish Ancestry, for the meeting of the Washington County Genealogical Society Tuesday, September 7, in the Helen Wilson Room of the Washington Public Library. The program is open to the public without charge.
Driver’s stations closed
All Iowa Department of Transportation driver’s license stations will be closed Saturday, September 4 through Monday, September 6 in observance of Labor Day. Stations resume normal operations Tuesday, September 7.
Senator Bolkcom sets office hours
State Senator Joe Bolkcom announced the start of regular monthly office hours, starting Tuesday, September 7, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Room C, Iowa City Public Library. Day, time and location will vary, he noted. Girl Scouts Recruitment continues locally
A Girl Scouts Recruitment Night, for all levels, was Tuesday, August 31 from 7-9 p.m. in the Mid-Prairie Middle School. Scouting is for all girls ages 5-17 and annual membership dues are $6. 10th annual craft festival set in Washington
The 10th annual craft festival, sponsored by the Washington Chamber of Commerce, is set for Saturday, September 11 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the downtown Central Park. More than 120 crafters are expected and more than $300 will be given out during the event. For more information, call 319-653-3272.
Farm Safety Day Camp set in Washington
Farm Safety Day Camp, sponsored by Progressive Farmer magazine, is 8 a.m.-noon, September 11 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The program is for children and teaches them about farm safety hazards ranging from grain bins to farm equipment.
