U. S. Representative Leonard Boswell will be in Kalona, Tuesday, August 31 in the Kalona Valley North Apartments, 808 10th St., from 3:30-4:15 p.m. to discuss the problem of crime against senior citizens. He will highlight the Senior Safety Act of 1999, a bill he is co-sponsoring.

Girls Scouts Recruitment Night set August 31

A Girls Scouts Recruitment Night, for all levels, is set for Tuesday, August 31 from 7-9 p.m. in the Mid-Prairie Middle School. Scouting is for all girls ages 5-17 and annual membership dues are $76. September deadline for city candidates

Deadline for filing for mayor and two city council positions in Kalona is September 16. Councilman David Droz and Mayor J. D. Boyd announced they are not seeking re-election. Councilman Jerry Kauffman said he had not yet decided if he would run. Municipal elections are November 9.

County fair evaluation meeting planned

A county fair evaluation meeting is set for 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 31 in the Washington County Extension Office, North Marion Ave., Washington. County 4-H department superintendents will make recommendations for next year’s event. Besides the superintendents and assistants, 4-H leaders, members and parents may attend the session.

Fall field day set September 9

The annual fall field day at Iowa State University’s Research Farm is Thursday, September 9 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and focuses on Prospering in Tough Times. There is no pre-registration and additional information is available by calling 319-337-2145 or 319-385-8126. Besides discussion of crop topics, the program includes a salute to George Washington Carver.

IDOT officials to attend Chamber meeting

Representatives from the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) will attend the August 30 meeting of the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce to discuss the planned improvement of Iowa Highway 1. Officials said that it is very unlikely that there will be a Kalona by-pass on the highway. The Chamber meets at noon in the downtown Chamber Building.

Halloween Hike planning meeting August 26

The Washington County Conservation Board planning committee will hold a Halloween Hike meeting for August 26 at 6 p.m. in the county courthouse. Volunteers are needed to play characters, carve jack-o-lanterns, serve refreshments, create costumes and decorations and other tasks for hike set for Saturday, October 23. If interested but unable to attend the meeting, contact the Washington County Conservation Board, 319-653-7765.

87th Infantry reunion set in Kentucky

The 87th (Golden Acorn) Infantry Divsiion will celebrate its 50th anniversary reunion at the Drawbridge Estates, Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky October 26-October 3. The 87th was activitated and trained as a combant Infantry Division that served in both world wars. It earned three Bronze Battle Stars for its efforts in the battles of the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe in WW II. For more information, call 248-887-9005.

Crisis Center seeking several volunteers

The Crisis Center, 1121 Gilbert Court, Iowa City, needs volunteers for its Food Bank and Crisis Intervention Program. Food Bank volunteers complete a 12-hour training and 3-hour on-site observation course, then are asked to work a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week for at least six months. Crisis Intervention workers complete a 60-hour training program and are asked to work a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week for at least nine months. 10th annual craft festival set in Washington

The 10th annual craft festival, sponsored by the Washington Chamber of Commerce, is set for Saturday, September 11 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the downtown Central Park. More than 120 crafters are expected and more than $300 will be given out during the event. For more information, call 319-653-3272.

Farm Safety Day Camp set in Washington

Farm Safety Day Camp, sponsored by Progressive Farmer magazine, is set for 8 a.m.-noon, September 11 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The program is for children and teaches them about farm safety hazards ranging from grain bins to farm equipment.
