September deadline for city candidates

Deadline for filing for mayor and two city council positions in Kalona is September 16. Nomination papers may be filed starting Monday, August 23. Councilman David Droz and Mayor J. D. Boyd announced they are not seeking re-election. Councilman Jerry Kauffman said he had not yet decided if he would run. Municipal elections will be held November 9.

6th grade orientation

night planned

An orientation program for 6th graders is set for 7:30 p.m., Thursday, August 19 at Mid-Prairie Middle School. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Students and parents will be able to review the class schedule, visit with staff members and tour the building.

Fall field day set September 9

The annual fall field day at Iowa State University’s Research Farm is Thursday, September 9 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and focuses on Prospering in Tough Times. There is no pre-registration and additional information is available by calling 319-337-2145 or 319-385-8126. Besides discussion of crop topics, the program includes a salute to George Washington Carver.

IDOT officials to attend Chamber meeting

Representatives from the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) will attend the August 30 meeting of the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce to discuss the planned improvement of Iowa Highway 1. Officials said that it is very unlikely that there will be a Kalona by-pass on the highway. The Chamber meets at noon in the downtown Chamber Building.

Halloween Hike planning meeting August 26

The Washington County Conservation Board planning committee will hold a Halloween Hike meeting for August 26 at 6 p.m. in the county courthouse. Volunteers are needed to play characters, carve jack-o-lanterns, serve refreshments, create costumes and decorations and other tasks for hike set for Saturday, October 23. If interested but unable to attend the meeting, contact the Washington County Conservation Board, 319-653-7765.

FFA plans ice cream social in August

The Mid-Prairie FFA Chapter will hold its ice cream social August 24 at 7 p.m. at the school, followed by a brief meeting. The event replaces the traditional watermelon feed.

Mercy announces new cardiovascular services

Mercy Iowa City’s cardiology program has added a third cardiac catheterization lab in the Cardiac Catheterization facility, lst floor, east wing of Mercy Hospital. Services are electrophysiology (EP), a specialized area that deals with heart rhythms. The new EP lab opened August 2.

Crisis Center seeking several volunteers

The Crisis Center, 1121 Gilbert Court, Iowa City, needs volunteers for its Food Bank and Crisis Intervention Program. Food Bank volunteers complete a 12-hour training and 3-hour on-site observation course, then are asked to work a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week for at least six months. Crisis Intervention workers complete a 60-hour training program and are asked to work a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week for at least nine months. 10th annual craft festival set in Washington

The 10th annual craft festival, sponsored by the Washington Chamber of Commerce, is set for Saturday, September 11 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the downtown Central Park. More than 120 crafters are expected and more than $300 will be given out during the event. For more information, call 319-653-3272.

Hospice schedules annual training

Hospice of Washington County will hold its annual training classes for those interested in volunteering with hospice. Classes are Mondays from 6:30-8:30 p.m., September 27-November 29, at the Hospice office, 1509 E. Washington St. If interested, contact Debra Zahradnek, 319-653-7321. Cost is $10 to cover materials.

Farm Safety Day Camp set in Washington

Farm Safety Day Camp, sponsored by Progressive Farmer magazine, is set for 8 a.m.-noon, September 11 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The program is for children and teaches them about farm safety hazards ranging from grain bins to farm equipment.
