FFA plans ice cream social in August
The Mid-Prairie FFA Chapter will hold its ice cream social August 24 at 7 p.m. at the school, followed by a brief meeting. The event replaces the traditional watermelon feed.
Supervisors to meet Thursday, August 12
The Washington County Board of Supervisors meet at 9 a.m., Thursday, August 12 to discuss the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) with the City of Washington’s Finance Committee. The meeting is in the Supervisors office at the county courthouse.
Crisis Center seeking several volunteers
The Crisis Center, 1121 Gilbert Court, Iowa City, needs volunteers for its Food Bank and Crisis Intervention Program. Food Bank volunteers complete a 12-hour training and 3-hour on-site observation course, then are asked to work a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week for at least six months. Crisis Intervention workers complete a 60-hour training program and are asked to work a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week for at least nine months. If interested, call the Center at 351-0140 or attend an informational meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, September 7.
10th annual craft festival set in Washington
The 10th annual craft festival, sponsored by the Washington Chamber of Commerce, is set for Saturday, September 11 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the downtown Central Park. More than 120 crafters are expected and more than $300 will be given out during the event. For more information, call 319-653-3272.
Hospice schedules annual training
Hospice of Washington County will hold its annual training classes for those interested in volunteering with hospice. Classes are Mondays from 6:30-8:30 p.m., September 27-November 29, at the Hospice office, 1509 E. Washington St. If interested, contact Debra Zahradnek, 319-653-7321. Cost is $10 to cover materials.
IDOT officials to attend Chamber meeting
Representatives from the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) will attend the August 30 meeting of the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce to discuss the planned improvement of Iowa Highway 1. Officials said that it is very unlikely that there will be a Kalona by-pass on the highway. The Chamber meets at noon.
