Blood drive collection exceeds its goal
The semi-annual blood drive, sponsored by the Kalona Optimist Club in cooperation with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, collected 113 units, exceeding the original goal of 110. There were 131 possible donors who attended, but 18 had to be deferred, due mainly to the heat. Organizers said that the turnout and collection is one of the best in recent years.
Dr. Nancy Short nominated for award
Dr. Nancy Short of Kalona was nominated for the Family Physician of the Year award given annually by the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP). The award will be presented in October at the IAFP’s 52nd Annual Meeting and Scientific Assembly. Winner of the 1999 Iowa Family Doctor of the Year becomes Iowa’s nominee for the American Academy of Family Physicians’ 2000 National Family Doctor of the Year Award.
Kalona artists win at Arts Festival
Steve Maxon and Doris Park of MaxCast in Kalona were among the 13 artists who won cash awards at the 1999 Des Moines Arts Festival. They won a $650 Best of Sculpture award. The Festival drew some 125,000 to the juried show that featured 150 artists from throughout the country. Proceeds from the event benefit the Des Moines Art Center and the continuation of the Festival.
ADD expert speaks at seminar July 26
Dr. J. C. Cluney, nationally known expert on Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) will speak at a free seminar Monday, July 26, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Kalona Chamber of Commerce Building., 514 B Ave. Sponsored by HealthSource, Inc. of Springfield, Illinois, the program will deal with Cluney’s use of natural protocols (vitamins, minerals and herbs) for ADD, ADHD and depression. Self-Renewal Day set
Self-Renewal Day, among the Better Health and Fitness events arranged by Mercy Iowa City, is set for Saturday, July 24, in the Community Room at the Coral Ridge Mall. The program offers mini-workshops on a variety of topics, all free of charge.

Library program needs many volunteers
The summer program at the Kalona Public Library needs many volunteers to serve as listeners and help with activities Mondays from 2-3 p.m. in July. Call 656-3501 for details.
Tourism Development Fund receives help
Governor Vilsack’s approval of the Community Attraction and Tourism Development Fund, will aid Iowa’s tourism program by allocating $12.5 million for two years to establish and promote tourism attractions and facilities. It established a competitive program to help communities develop such facilities. Up to $1.2 million may be used for marketing and promoting Iowa attractions outside Iowa and up to $400,000 used to provide grants to up to three political subdivisions to conduct feasibility/viability studies. The fund will be administered by the Iowa Department of Economic Development.
Hoover Museum sets special programs
The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch will hold special programs Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m., dealing with aspects of the childhood world of the man who became the 31st President of the United States. There will be a number of free hands-on activities during July and August at the site, I-80, exit 254.
