Part of County Health Department moves

The Environmental Division of the Washington County Health Department has moved to the lower level of the Washington County Courthouse. Its new telephone number is 653-7782 and is staffed from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The department is celebrating its move by offering free drinking water tests for all county residents who obtain their water from wells.

Fundraiser planned to aid chaplaincy program

A pork supper is set for Friday, June 11, from 4:30-7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, Wellman, to aid the chaplaincy program at Parkview Manor. A new feature this year is a silent auction. Tickets are available at Freeman Foods, Parkview Manor, Wellman Lumber, Hills Bank Kalona and also at the door.

County 4-H recognition luncheon set July 24

The Washington Bancorp which includes Washington Federal Savings Bank, Wellman Federal Savings Bank and Rubio Savings Bank of Brighton will hold its first county 4-H recognition luncheon July 24 as part of the final day of the Washington County Fair. It will follow the livestock auction and precede the annual awards ceremony.

Breast Imaging Center sets Open House

Mercy Iowa City’s new Breast Imaging Center will hold an Open House Sunday, June 13, from 1-3 p.m. The Center is on the main level at Mercy Hospital. The Center’s regular hours are 7:30 a.m.- 7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Summer puppet camp set in West Liberty

The Eulenspiegel Puppet Theater will hold a summer puppet camp at the Owl Glass Puppetry Center, 319 North Calhoun St., West Liberty, July 26-30 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. daily. It is a hands-on camp in which participants will make their own puppets. Cost for the camp is $125, and covers materials and snacks. For more information, call the Center at 319-627-2487.

Washington queen contest planned for July 22

The Washington County Fair Queen Contest is set for July 22 in the Washington Community Center, adjacent to the county fairgrounds. The contest is open to young women ages 16-21 who do not have to reside in Washington County to compete. Shirley Greiner is the contest superintendent and anyone interested in entering may call her at 319-653-1030 or 515-636-3010.

Special farm tour set June 12 near Iowa City

A free farm tour, part of a Community Guide to Agriculture event, is June 12 from 9-11 a.m. 3.8 miles southwest of the Highway 218/Highway 1 interchange. Participants may drive to the site or meet at the Gateway Plaza sign to car pool. Signs will direct participants to the area at the southwest corner of the intersection of Highway 1 with Kansas Ave. Tours will be conducted by Ed Williams and the event is sponsored by the Johnson County Soil & Water Conservation District with support from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.
