Sign-up for swimming lessons at the Kalona Municipal Pool is Wednesday, May 26, and Thursday, May 27, at 7 p.m. in the enclosed shelter at the Kalona City Park.
Memorial Day Poppies aid American veterans
During the Memorial Day holiday, members of the American Legion Auxiliary sell paper poppies as a remembrance of the men and women who sacrificed (in some cases their lives) to protect American freedom. The poppies are made by hospitalized veterans and funds aid with finances and services for the veterans who are paid to do the work. There are no fixed prices for the poppies; any donation is acceptable.
FSB sets Reminisce Party
The Farmers Savings Bank will hold a Reminisce Party Tuesday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Kalona United Methodist Church, featuring guest speaker Frank L. Yoder. There also will be an open microphone for participants to share memories. Refreshments will be served and there is a drawing for prizes. The program is free and open to the public; RSVP by May 28 to Diane, 656-2265.
Cancer Survivor’s Day set in Iowa City
The Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and its staff will hold its 2nd annual Cancer Survivor’s Day Sunday, June 6 from 1-3 p.m. in front of the VA Medical Center. A cancer survivor panel will discuss issues, and there will be entertainment.
Special farm tour set June 12 near Iowa City
A free farm tour, part of a Community Guide to Agriculture event, is June 12 from 9-11 a.m. 3.8 miles southwest of the Highway 218/Highway 1 interchange. Participants may drive to the site or meet at the Gateway Plaza sign to car pool. Signs will direct participants to the area at the southwest corner of the intersection of Highway 1 with Kansas Ave. Tours will be conducted by Ed Williams and the event is sponsored by the Johnson County Soil & Water Conservation District with support from the Leopold Center For Sustainable Agriculture. University seeks subjects for heart failure study
University of Iowa cardiologist seek men and women, ages 18-35, who have decreased left ventricular systolic dysfunction for a study of people with chronic heart failure. Participants will take injections three times per week and make weekly visits to the UI for a month, then monthly visits for five additional months. Homecoming Quilt Show set in Richland
A quilt show will be held in conjunction with the Richland Homecoming Celebration, June 11-13. Anyone interested in the show (display only) may contact Michelle Young, 515-456-3981, by June 1. The display will be in Steve Roberts’ building, west side of the square. Quilts may be left at the Richland library June 1-5 and June 8-10 during library hours.
