Kalona library program canceled, hours change

The Kalona Public Library Storytime program is canceled until further notice. Additionally, the extended Monday night hours also are canceled and the library will close at 6 p.m. Mondays, also until further notice.

Christmas Eve service

A special Christmas Eve service will be held in the Kalona Mennonite Church, starting at 5:30 p.m., Friday, December 24. Special music and scripture will be part of the program which concludes with a candlelight service. The Rev. Mick Murray will lead the meditation.

Glucose screening clinic set in Ainsworth

A special glucose screening clinic is set for Thursday, January 20, at Ainsworth Town View Village. It is free, but donations will be accepted. For appointments, call Gazena Havel, 319-657-2742. The clinic is sponsored by the Washington County Health and Home Care.

Driver license stations closed for holidays

All Iowa Department of Transportation driver license stations will be closed Friday, December 24 and Saturday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday. Stations also will be closed Friday, December 31 and Saturday, January 1, for the New Year’s Day observance. Normal hours resume December 27 and January 3.

DOT permit center closed for holidays

Truckers needing Iowa Department of Transportation permits (or other services) near Christmas and New Year’s Day need to obtain them in advance. The permit center, Park Fair Mall, 100 Euclid Ave., Des Moines, will be closed for the holidays, starting at 4:30 p.m., December 23 to 6 a.m., December 27 and again from December 30 to January 3. Oversize and overweight load movements are allowed to move on both of the holidays provided permits are obtained in advance. For more information, call the center, 515-237-3264.

Early mail dispatch through December 23

Early dispatch of mail started December 6 and continues through December 23, which means all items deposited by 3 p.m. will leave at that time to receive priority processing. Mail will be collected from the outside collection box Sunday, December 19 at 3 p.m. Mail deposited in the post office after noon Saturday will not be dispatched until 5 p.m. the following Monday.

Genealogical Society offers past calendar

The Washington County Genealogical Society has combined past and future in its 2000 Calendar of Washington County’s Past. The special issue is available for $6 from the Society at P. O. Box 446, Washington, Iowa 52353.

Public Art Commission seeks entries for show

The Ames Public Art Commission seeks entries for its 4th annual Art Around the Corner Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit set for May -April 2001 in the Ames Main Street district. Up to eight sculptures will be displayed. Artists residing in Iowa or bordering states may submit up to three entries. Those selected will receive a $200 honorarium, and the works may be offered for sale. Deadline for slide entries is January 31. Puppet workshop set at Owl Glass
