Influenza and pneumonia shots save lives

You may call that achy, upset stomach feeling “a touch of the flu” or a “24 hour flu bug”. In fact, true influenza, which can lead to pneumonia, is a serious illness. Combined, influenza and pneumococcal disease claim the lives of more than 60,000 people in the United States each year.

At high risk are people 65 years of age and older; those with chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases or diabetes; and people with weakened immune systems.

However, you can be protected against influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia with safe and effective vaccines and both vaccines are covered under Medicare Part B.

Heartland Home Health, a program of the Washington County Hospital and Clinics will provide influenza and pneumonia vaccines in the Kalona United Methodist Church November 7 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., the same time as the Kalona United Methodist Church Fall Harvest Dinner.

Vaccines for the general public are $10 for the flu vaccine and $15 for the pneumonia vaccine.
