With Census Day 2000 less than three months away, Census 2000 offices in Iowa are gearing up operations, including recruiting and training of local census staff.
Census 2000 needs a significant number of people. By April 2000 each local office will have a work force of more than 1,000 temporary, full and part-time employees.
“It takes a large number of qualified individuals to take an accurate census,” said Henry Palacios, Kansas City Regional Census Director. “The Ames office is in the process of identifying, testing and hiring people who know their local area and whose work will make a difference to their communities for years to come.”
More than $200 billion in federal funds are distributed annually to state and local governments based on the census population count.
The opening ceremony for the Ames office, Northern Lights Center, 809 Wheeler, is set for 2 p.m., January 19. Mayors and officials from 350 communities and 27 counties in south central, southwest and southeast Iowa have been invited to attend.
For information about Census 2000 and job opportunities, call the Ames office, 1-888-325-7733 or 515-232-3390.
