Kalona approves agreement with M-P

At the regular meeting of the Kalona City Council on Monday, May 2, the council approved a 28E agreement with the Mid-Prairie Community School District for use of the gym in the Kalona YMCA/Community Building.

The contract wasn’t set to expire until next year, but Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said the city wanted to renew the agreement before Mark Schneider leaves the superintendent position so that the new superintendent doesn’t have to worry about the contract in his first year.

The 28E agreement was kept exactly the same as the previous contract, with the fees increasing $1,000 per year (from $14,000) until 2028.

Under the contract the school district gets one half of the gym from 3:30-5:30 p.m. every day that school is in session.

“It’s a really good deal. We work well with the school,” Schlabaugh said. “There are times they need the full gym for a game or an event, or sometimes they need to come early when the weather requires it… We just communicate with them and they communicate with us and we make it work.”

Schlabaugh said he contacted the YMCA, who had no issues with the current agreement or with the renewal of the contract.
