KALONA
Identical twins Levi and Landan Paulsen, former linemen for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Kalona residents since 2020, came before the Kalona City Council Monday night, requesting the use of Southtown Recreational Area facilities for an event on Saturday, April 27.
The pair had held a successful crawfish boil and 3-mile run at City Park’s Shelter B in 2023, and friends suggested they do something similar this year utilizing Southtown’s “awesome trails.”
The proposed April 27 event would include a three-hour endurance run in the morning and a crawfish boil around noon. The run, which would consist of laps on a 1.89-mile loop, would serve as a fundraiser for a friend’s memorial fund.
Currently the Paulsen brothers expect about 70 people to attend. The Southtown Rec Area would remain open to the public during the event.
“It’s a great opportunity to showcase the area. It’s a great fundraiser,” city administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said.
The council approved the use of the Southtown Rec Area for this purpose.
YMCA Pool Schedule
The Kalona City Pool is set to open on May 30 for a season running through August 19. The daily admission rate for youth/adult will increase from $4 to $5, thanks mainly to an increase in insurance premiums. Additional lessons will be offered this year, and “staffing looks good,” Schlabaugh said.
“The YMCA does an excellent job on this,” he added.
The council approved the 2024 proposed pool schedule.
Road Closures
The council approved several road closures during their March 18 meeting.
During the Kalona Farmers Market, which will run alternating Saturdays from May 11 to Oct. 12, 5th Street will be closed from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. During two night markets, on June 21 and Aug. 17, B Avenue from 6th Street to 7th Street will be closed in the evening.
During Kalona Fall Festival on Sept. 27-28, road closures on 9th Street and D Avenue will continue as they have in the past.
Other Action
The council approved 2023 water quality reports for both North and South water plants.
The council approved the FY22-23 audit, which Schlabaugh noted was the city’s first remote audit.
Mayor Mark Robe issued a proclamation making the first Thursday in April Junior Achievement Day in Kalona.
The Kalona City Council will next meet on Monday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
