Maybe it was the weather; maybe it was the cooking. In any case, the annual pancake and sausage breakfast Saturday for the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department drew a record-setting crowd of 1,820.
The number, 51 more than last’s record of 1,769, averages out to some 266 persons served for each of the seven hours of the event that started at 6 a.m. and wrapped up at 1 p.m.
Even a fire call did not halt the serving. When a call came in at approximately 9 a.m., firemen left their cooking duties to extinguish a grass fire at the Tom Knepp residence. Volunteers, including the wives of firemen, stepped in to help.
“We are very grateful to the community for such outstanding support,” said Fire Chief Steve Yotty. “Especially to those who helped out when we had to take care of the fire.”
Proceeds are earmarked to help with the cost of a new, large generator and a fund to purchase another vehicle, probably in 2002.
