At 10:25 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call reporting a structure fire at 2510 Hwy 22, two miles east of Kalona. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the “attic and roof line were fully involved” according to Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek.
The house, a new build currently under construction, was empty of appliances and furnishings, apart from the furnace and water heater. Electrical work had not yet been completed, and the finished fireplace and chimney were being used for heat while work progressed on the house.
The fire department’s investigation determined the cause of the fire was accidental, likely originating from the fireplace.
The KVFD was assisted by Riverside, Wellman, and Washington fire departments. The fire was fully extinguished by 3:30 a.m.
“It was a lot of work,” Zahradnek commented.
No one was in the house at the time of the fire. The structure is considered a “total loss,” according to Zahradnek.
