Everything from Storytime and a clown to music and murder are part of the October schedule of events at the Kalona Public Library.

Besides the regular Wednesday Storytime at 10:30 a.m., there will be a Tuesday program, featuring Lois Gugel. The first session was October 5 at 10:30 a.m. when Gugel did Johnny Appleseed.

The Wednesday, October 6, event featured Mrs. Hinky Dink the Clown (who is set for return appearances, too).

Next event is Tuesday, October 12, at 10:30 a.m. when University of Iowa graduate student Rita Orffutt will perform on the guitar for a special Storytime with songs for preschoolers.

The Wednesday, October 13, Storytime at 10:30 a.m. features Children’s Program Coordinator Mary Piper with preschool stories about frogs.

Teen Read

The American Library Association’s Teen Read Week is October 16-23, and the local library will kick-off with a Murder Mystery Party Friday, October 15, at 7 p.m. for students in grades 6-9. Cost is $2 to cover pizza and beverages. Pre-registration is appreciated. Contact Beth Sexton, 319-648-2609 for more information.

During Teen Week, the library will have a drawing for new young adult books donated by Prairie Lights Books, Lemstone Christian Books and Barnes & Noble. Drawing is Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the library.

Students ages 12-18 may register each time they check out a book or magazine during Teen Read Week. Winners need not be present to win.

A Family Bedtime Storytime with teens reading to tots is set for Monday, October 17 at the library, starting at 6:30 p.m. Cadet Girl Scouts from Sherri Nisly’s troop will read stories with the children.

Friday, October 22, at 7 p.m. the Barnes & Noble bookstore at the Coral Ridge Mall is holding a Harry Potter Trivia Contest. If there is interest in car pooling, contact the library.
