Katie Ellen Yoder, 89, of Kalona died Monday, July 19, 1999, in Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following a short illness.
A memorial service is Thursday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. in West Union Mennonite Church, Wellman, with the Reverend David Boshart officiating. Visitation with the family was Wednesday, July 21, from 4-8 p.m., in Peterseim Funeral Home, Kalona. Burial was Monday, July 19, in West Union Cemetery.
Born September 28, 1909 in rural Parnell, she was the daughter of Abner G. and Mary Ellen (Gingerich) Yoder.
She attended Iowa Mennonite School, Hesston Academy and Eastern Mennonite School.
During World War II, she cooked for Civilian Public Service camps in Belton, Montana and Dennison, Iowa. After the war, she returned to Iowa and cooked for President and Mrs. Gilmore at the University of Iowa and for a brief time cooked for Grant Wood. She owned and operated Greene Center Bookstore for 50 years.
Miss Yoder was a member of West Union Mennonite Church.
Survivors include one brother and two sisters-in-law, Oren and Mary Kate Yoder and Verna Yoder, all of Wellman, and nine nieces and nephews, Arlin Yoder, Eldon Yoder, Aldeen Wenger, Darvin Yoder, Russell Yoder, Imo Jeanne Johnson, Galen Yoder, John Yoder and Bonita Yoder.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Gideon Yoder and Edwin Yoder.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Union Mennonite Church and Iowa Mennonite School.
