Koehler rates living in Kalona tops

Virtually from the time she first saw Kalona, Cyndi Koehler knew it was where she wanted to live.

Today, Koehler is both a resident and a business professional in Kalona. Her real estate office is now housed at 311 4th St., the area that formerly was Arlene Oldfield’s realty business.

“It just worked out that the space was available,” said Koehler who said that there are plans to redecorate, but otherwise the location is “ideal.”

Her firm is RE/MAX Heartland, LC and besides Koehler, has two sales associates, Evelyn Allen and Cyndi’s husband, Jim Koehler.

“He is also a part owner,” she added.

Prior to coming to Kalona, Koehler was with Coldwell-Banker and with RE/MAX Elite.

She is a member of the Iowa City Area Association of Realtors as well as the English River Board of Realtors, is president-elect for the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Kalona Optimist Club and the Moss Country Friends Chapter of the P. Buckley Moss Society.

Her emphasis is residential property “as well as some land and farms” throughout the Kalona, Wellman, Riverside, Washington area as well as Iowa City/Coralville and North Liberty.

The firm also has the Iowa City Multiple Listing Service and the Washington Multiple Listing Service.

Has she seen anything change in the type of homes people want?

“Most want new housing,” she said, “especially with low maintenance or even maintenance free. One-level living is very popular as are gas-operated fireplaces.”

People also prefer “an open floor plan, especially for traffic flow.”

Aside from her mother’s moving to Kalona, Koehler said there is another area connection.

“Jim’s mother was the OB nurse at Washington County Hospital for 30 years.”

By the time the Koehlers moved to their home on 9th St., Cyndi “really knew this place.”

She views the Amish as a “tremendous asset” to the community.

“They are wonderful neighbors, and I love hearing the sound of the horses and buggies going by.”

Office hours are Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon. Other times are available by appointment.
