LONE TREE
Having faced each other just seven days prior in a best of three, the Lady Lions hosted WACO again for a best of five matchup this time around.
Having won the best of three, Lone Tree aimed to duplicate its success, but the Warriors put a halt to those plans.
Picking up its first Southeast Iowa Super Conference victory of the season, WACO (6-18) earned a 3-1 (25-23, 27-29, 25-25, 25-20) win over Lone Tree (8-15) on Oct. 8.
Neither team could escape from the other in the first set with the score becoming tied at points of 7-7, 18-18, and even 23-23. The set had deuce written all over it, but the Warriors never let it get that far, scoring two consecutive points to take a narrow win and go up 1-0.
It was a different beginning for the second set with Lone Tree jumping out to a 6-0 lead, but eventually the second set began to strike stark similarities to the previous set. WACO battled back to erase its deficit and tie the game at 17-17.
After the set became knotted up neither team let the other stray far from each other and this time deuce was on the menu. Almost reaching the thirties, Lone Tree proved to be resilient and took a 29-27 set win to tie the matchup at 1-1.
Bouncing back, the Warriors won the third set by ten points. Now trailing 2-1, Lone Tree’s only avenue of victory was to force a fifth set, but the fourth set and the game went the way of the Warriors.
Leading the Lady Lions in kills with six was senior Rylee Shield. When it came to assists, fellow senior Hayden Yoder led Lone Tree in assists with 14.
Another senior who led Lone Tree on the night was Alex Dautremont with a team high 17 digs. Dautremont also tallied a team best six service aces.
Wapello 3, Lone Tree 0
Wapello celebrated its senior night by welcoming Lone Tree for a SEISC matchup and the Arrows stayed undefeated in conference play with a sweep of the Lady Lions, 3-0 (25-13, 25-4, 25-16) on Oct. 10.
For Lone Tree this loss drops its conference record to 2-6 while Wapello raised its unblemished record in conference play to 7-0.
The Arrows were led by a senior and freshman duo who both reached double digit kills. Freshman Mila Jordan led the team with 17 kills and senior Rachel Hoeg tallied 10 kills of her own. Contributing to those kills was Annaka Greiner with a team high 38 assists.
For the Lady Lions they had seniors Avery Morarie, Cate Sexton, Madison Floyd and junior Alyson Ford all tie for the team leads in kills with three. Hayden Yoder ended the night with a team leading eight assists and Alex Dautremont led Lone Tree with 16 digs.
Up next for Lone Tree (8-16) is a first-round playoff matchup on the road against the Winfield-Mt Union Wolves (11-10) on Oct. 21.
