Conference competition was the name of the game this past Thursday as members of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference battled each other for gold and glory at a conference championship meet hosted by WACO.
For the Lady Lions it was another excellent outing for a team continuing to improve as they set multiple new personal bests, broke another school record, and placed first in four events.
In the North Division, the Lady Lions captured 100 points to place third in a field of nine. Placing first was Pekin with 137 and Louisa-Mucatine was the runner-up with 132.
In the sprint medley the quick quartet of Addison McCullough, Vivian Zaruba, Ava Christoffeson, and Rylee Shield outdid themselves as they broke a school record they set one week prior by racing to first in 1:52.66. Their new school record time is currently the fifth fastest in Class 1A.
The same group of four captured two additional conference championships as they grabbed gold in the 4x100m relay (51.80, sixth fastest in 1A) and in the 4x200m relay (1:50.87, also sixth fastest in 1A).
Shield also proved to be the fastest in the 400m as the senior surged to first in 1:00.78 which is the 10th best time in 1A.
The runner-up spot in the long jump was awarded to Christofferson as the standout junior’s best jump was measured at 16-00.50. It was the freshman out of Winfield-Mt Union, Kynlee Buffington, who placed first with 16-05.50.
Earning a couple of top three finishes in field events was Hayden Yoder. The Lone Tree senior was the runner-up in the discus (108-00) and placed third in the shot put (32-07.75).
In the boys section of the conference meet, the Lions scored 26 points to place 8th. Winning the conference title for the third year in a row with a first place score of 179 was Columbus. Runner-up went to Pekin who scored 155.
One of the best finishes for the Lions was earned by Dom Garcia as the junior sprinted to third in the 200m with a time of 23.53. Gracia also placed fourth in the 100m in 11.65.
Another notable finish for Lone Tree was the team of Garcia, Gray Spilman, Cade Willoz, and Emmett Burke ended the 4x200m relay race in 1:36.69 to place third. The same team also placed fourth in the 4x100m relay in 46.26.
Hillcrest results
While battling amongst their conference peers, the Raven girls garnered 86 team points in the North Division to place fifth overall.
A big contributor to the team score was Rya Scott. Crossing the finish line first in two events with season best times. Rya Scott claimed the gold in the 100m (12.76) and the 200m (26.63).
Rya Scott also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 15-06.
The quartet of Delaney Shaw, Stavia Miller, Karina Bourha, and Niva Helmuth ran the 4x200m relay in a season best time of 1:53.98 to procure the runner-up spot.
Another impressive relay race finish came from the team of Rya Scott, Miller, Bourha, and Helmuth who ended the 4x100m with a season best time of 53.56 to place third.
The long distance running duo of Marie Yoder and Siena Stanerson placed third and fourth respectively in both the 1500m and the 3000m. Yoder’s times were 5:21.06 and 11:31.08 and Stanerson’s times were 5:43.70 and 11:48.25.
Going over to the boys side of things, the Ravens placed seventh with a score of 36.
Owen Scott was the conference champ in the long jump as the junior out leaped the competition with a jump of 20-09.
When it came to track events, Owen Scott placed third in the 100m in 11.57. Recording a new PR, Owen Scott finished the 200m in 23.68 to place fourth. In the same event fellow junior teammate Kayden Estell placed fifth in 24.29.
Highland results
After the dust settled after a day of clashing with conference foes, the Highland girls obtained 49 team points to place sixth in the North Division.
The best individual finish for the Huskies came from Kamryn Fink as the freshman was the runner-up in the 100m with a time of 13.25.
Highland was also the runner-up in the 4x100m relay as the team of Fink, Mayia Singbeil, Lilly Barre, and Alexa Hahn crossed the finish in 53.06. The same team placed third in the 4x200m with a time of 1:54.50.
For the Highland boys they ended the night with a team score of 19 to place ninth.
Their best finish came in the 4x200m relay as the team of Liam Roberts, William Dunbar, Bryce Hazelett, and Cayden Day placed fourth in 1:36.97. Dunbar also earned a sixth place finish in the 100m with a time of 11.68.
