Coming off the heels of spring break, it was go time for the Lone Tree track and field teams as they headed to Louisa-Muscatine last Monday for their first outdoor meet of the season.
On the girls side the Lady Lions saw enough success to end the meet with a third place finish. Louisa-Muscatine placed first and Van Buren was the runner-up.
“A lot of girls competed in four events. The girls showed a ton of grit and toughness,” Lone Tree girls track head coach Chad Shield said. “They had nine days off for spring break and this was our first day back together as a team. I was really proud of the way our girls competed tonight.”
It was a great all-around performance for the Lady Lions who came away with multiple first place finishes.
Showing off her top-tier speed, Ava Christofferson captured first in the 100m and the 200m. Rylee Shield was also a blur on the track, placing first in the 400m and earning a runner-up finish in the 800m.
“I thought Ava Christofferson and Rylee Shield were very consistent and really competed well,” coach Shield said.
Both Christoffers and Shield teamed up with Cate Sexton and Addy Eiben for the 4x100m relay and they flew past all the competition to take first place in an impressive fashion.
“I thought freshman Addy Eiben took a big step forward and showed a lot of confidence tonight as our anchor in the 4x100 team that took first,” coach Shield said.
The Lady Lion relay team of Dalanie Graap, Jazmine Nino, Lindsay Baltazar, and Eiben also had a strong finish by placing third in the 4x200m.
Off the track it was a great day throwing for Hayden Yoder who launched the shot put further than anyone else to place first and in the discus event the Lone Tree senior was the runner-up.
“Hayden Yoder was outstanding in our throwing events,” coach Shield said.
The duo of Christofferson and Shield also made their presence known in the long jump by placing second and fourth respectively.
On the boys side, the Lions earned 26 team points to place 7th in the final standings.
A top performance of the night for the Lions belonged to the team of Gray Spilman, Emmett Burke, Cade Willoz, and Dom Garcia who finished as the runner-up in the 800m sprint medley in 1:45.72. The same team also placed fourth with a time of 48.28 in the 4x100m relay.
Another runner-up performance in a relay race was claimed by the quartet of Burke, Garcia, Willoz, and Brock Nebergall who ended the distance medley with a time of 4:05.88. Garcia and Burke also showed off their speed in the 200m dash by placing 6th and 8th respectively with times of 24.81 and 24.97.
